Software Engineer

The Company

Founded in 2025 by Sam Rogers, who grew up managing 6,000 head on a North Queensland cattle station, Brumby builds autonomous drones that move and monitor cattle across the world’s largest properties. We’re replacing helicopters and motorbikes with drones that herd cattle, count herds, and monitor pasture on their own. Helicopter mustering is expensive, dangerous, and still misses cattle. Our drones launch from a dock, fly the paddock, do the work, and come home.

We went through YC (W26) and raised a seed round from the best investors in the valley. Our team is small and highly technical, and we’re already working with some of the largest ranches in the world. Engineering is based in Sydney, but the work happens everywhere. Expect to write code at a desk, in a truck, and in the dirt. We work hard because our ranchers do.

We have a team of 6 which is growing steadily, including Computer Vision, Robotics, AI Engineers and a Chief of Staff. We are looking to add a Software Engineer to this team. This is a hands-on role with full ownership of the platform, freeing the rest of engineering to focus on what happens in the air.

The Role

You will build the backbone that connects Brumby’s fleet to the cloud and keeps it running from anywhere. Our aircraft and docks operate on remote cattle stations where the connection might be a patchy 4G signal, a Starlink dish, or nothing at all for hours. Your job is to make sure every flight log, detection, and video feed makes it back to AWS eventually, and that every software update makes it out to our fleet.

On the cloud side, you will build and run our infrastructure. You will build and maintain everything from the customer backend and app, to our in-house software for planning missions, monitoring aircraft, and making sense of the data coming back from the field.

As the fleet grows, you will make sure the platform grows with it. That means shipping updates without grounding aircraft, knowing something is wrong before a customer does, and building systems that recover on their own.

What we’re looking for

Must-haves

• Production AWS experience, with infrastructure managed as code using Terraform or CDK across VPC, EC2/ECS, RDS, S3, and IAM

• Strong backend engineering in Python and FastAPI, including Postgres, API design, and database migrations

• Comfortable working across the stack with TypeScript and React, including Electron desktop applications

• Experience building reliable CI/CD pipelines with pinned images, staged environments, and rollback

• Strong understanding of edge systems: offline-first design, store-and-forward, idempotent sync, and device identity/enrolment

• Experience managing OTA updates and staged rollouts across fleets of Linux devices

Strong advantages

• Video streaming experience with RTSP, WebRTC, or WHEP

• Experience building networks that remain reliable over intermittent connections, including Tailscale or WireGuard over 4G/5G or Starlink

• Experience with MAVLink or ArduPilot

• Experience building compliance and audit systems, such as sealed records or S3 Object Lock

• Experience with fleet robotics or other physical products deployed in the field

• Experience with UX design and prototyping in Figma

• Full-stack experience shipping applications across frontend and backend

The Work

• Build and manage our AWS infrastructure entirely as code

• Build FleetOps: the backend, internal dashboard, and applications used by our team and customers

• Build edge sync between aircraft, docks, and the cloud that remains reliable over poor or intermittent connections

• Own OTA updates and fleet management, with safe staged rollouts across every aircraft and dock

• Build monitoring and alerting so we know about problems before our graziers do

The Setup

• Based in our Sydney office five days a week

• Regular field deployments to cattle stations (domestic and potentially international)

• Full Australian working rights required

• Work directly with (and report to) the founder
