The job market for the role is small but growing fast. Expect significant variance in what companies actually mean by the title — read the team description, the technical stack, and the actual responsibilities, not the title.

Three lanes have emerged. AI-native product companies (Anthropic, OpenAI, Cursor, Perplexity, Notion) hire AI product engineers to ship the core product surfaces of LLM-backed features at scale. AI-augmented product teams at established companies (Linear, Figma, Notion non-AI surfaces, Stripe, Atlassian) hire AI product engineers to add LLM features to existing products. Watch for warning signs in JDs. A "prompt engineer" role with no engineering responsibilities listed is often a glorified customer-support or content role, not a real engineering role. A 2026 JD that asks for 5+ years of "LLM experience" is a tell that the hiring manager is not calibrated to a field that did not exist at scale before 2023; gentle pushback in the interview is appropriate.
