Job Description

Apollo.io is the leading go-to-market solution for revenue teams, trusted by over 500,000 companies and millions of users globally, from rapidly growing startups to some of the world's largest enterprises. Founded in 2015, the company is one of the fastest growing companies in SaaS, raising approximately $250 million to date and valued at $1.6 billion. Apollo.io provides sales and marketing teams with easy access to verified contact data for over 210 million B2B contacts and 35 million companies worldwide, along with tools to engage and convert these contacts in one unified platform. By helping revenue professionals find the most accurate contact information and automating the outreach process, Apollo.io turns prospects into customers. Apollo raised a series D in 2023 and is backed by top-tier investors, including Sequoia Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, and more, and counts the former President and COO of Hubspot, JD Sherman, among its board members.

Your Role & Mission

Apollo's Rep Experience team builds the surface where sales teams do their actual work: prospecting, account and contact records, task management, dashboards, and the workflows that turn pipeline into revenue. As Engineering Manager, you'll lead one of the largest and most visible engineering teams in that org, responsible for the daily execution surface that reps at Apollo's enterprise customers rely on.

The team is in the middle of its most ambitious shift yet: moving from a tool reps open to a system that helps decide what a rep should do next, using account prioritization, task orchestration, and AI-driven recommendations. You'll help shape how that gets built, hire and grow the engineers who build it, and make sure the team ships quickly without breaking workflows that enterprise customers depend on every day.

Your responsibility will come in several forms, including but not limited to:

  • Help the team define, set, and adhere to goals and expectations.
  • Drive a culture of excellence, learning, and fun.
  • Critically observe and improve development and management processes within Apollo engineering.
  • Work closely with key stakeholders such as engineering leadership, Product Managers, and Designers to deliver high quality software at a rapid pace for an ever increasing user base.
  • Partner closely with the GTM team jumping on customer calls and not being a passthrough for your team, being an expert on everything you own.
  • Shape, and take part in, key decision making processes within the engineering organization.

Daily Adventures & Responsibilities

  • Participate in key technical decision making discussions such as sprint planning, software design, and occasionally code reviews.
  • Help build and scale a strong engineering team by sourcing and hiring candidates.
  • Help the team carry its share of on call responsibility sustainably, without it crowding out roadmap work.
  • Be a technical leader - there will be some coding, maybe not every day, you need to be able to lean into any project and lead from the details front as a mentor.
  • Support the team in trade off conversations. Own sizing, estimation, and technical direction. Technical counterpart to your product lead.

Competencies

  • You love scaling through well written documents and well defined processes. As a remote first company, documentation is critical to our hyper growth and success.
  • You are compassionate, put people first as a mentor, and are tactful both accepting and delivering criticism to others.
  • You have the leadership skills to think and execute strategically but are not afraid to get your hands dirty when needed.
  • Your technical understanding of engineering systems, especially related to data, is second to none.
  • You can relate to and admire Apollo's values of Ownership, Integrity, Curiosity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Fun.
  • You should be a better product thinker for your surface than anyone at the entirety of Apollo, other than your Product Manager.

Skills and Relevant Experience

  • 8+ years of hands on software engineering industry experience. You will be leading a team of multiple senior and staff level engineers, so you need to be technically very strong.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in people management, preferably leading senior engineers and managers.
  • Proven track record of technical leadership: strong fundamentals in software architecture at scale, effective engineering processes, and cross team function.
  • Experience with Ruby and Python.
  • Understanding of data privacy and security fundamentals.

Great to Have

  • Familiarity with React, MongoDB, SQL and ElasticSearch.
  • Experience with data platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, Airflow, and Looker.
  • Experience within Sales Tech..

Our Tech Stack

Our tech stack is React, Redux, and Next.js on the front end; Ruby, Python, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, and Redis on the backend; and Kubernetes, Docker, and Terraform for infrastructure.
